Turn Away, Run Away

22 years this week, an unknown band called Bronski Beat charted at #3 with their debut single Smalltown Boy, which detailed the troubles of a young man from Glasgow escaping to London for being gay. One of the first identifiably gay bands to get any chart success, Bronski Beat were pioneers in their own time.

22 years down the line, have we really moved that far from the world portrayed by BB?

In America it is still fine to trash gays. The debate about their worth rages on TV nightly. The discussion has gotten so bad that gay people are now blamed for staight marriage falling apart (which of course would suggest that all men are gay! ha!)

This may change if we get a Democrat in office and the tone changes from the top down.
